Leveraging AI vision on €1.5B construction projects using Viso Suite’s best-in-class infrastructure

Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group (RSRG) deployed Viso Suite computer vision for enhanced site safety

Customer background

The Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group (RSRG), headquartered in Austria, is a fourth-generation family-owned company operating in the fields of construction, resources and rail technology. Over 4,000 staff are employed across its global operations.

The business need

RSRG’s construction business unit offers civil engineering services on projects often exceeding €1.5 billion.

They identified the rental of heavy machinery as a key cost item on each project and sought to understand machinery utilization trends across global sites and over time:

  • Site Directors intended to use this insight to adjust rental periods to avoid idle time, reducing operational costs.
  • Commercial intended to optimize cost projections for new bids based on this insight. RSRG expected to lower prices leading to a potential increase in bid win rates.

Challenge

RSRG required an extra layer of preventative safety measures to mitigate PPE non-compliance and vehicle near-miss hazards on construction sites while keeping project costs low.

Impact

Remained at the industry standard for safety monitoring and compliance

Needed to balance advanced safety technology with cost efficiency

Pushed to best optimize safety data for continuous improvement

Resolution

RSRG worked alongside viso.ai and Datwyler IT Infra to deploy Viso Suite for real-time monitoring of PPE compliance and vehicle distances, seamlessly integrating into existing workflows. This solution enhanced safety, maintained cost-efficiency, and delivered actionable insights for continuous improvement, pushing the company far beyond the industry standard for safety compliance.

The solution

The end-to-end solution, built and configured on Viso Suite, involved:

  • Machinery Detection of individual pieces of equipment on each site
  • Machinery Utilization Tracking: Full visibility into when machinery is idle vs. being used in operation
  • Automated Reporting: Weekly reports sent to Site Directors. Where utilization is below target thresholds, a conversation ensues around site plans to optimize operations
  • Cost Efficiency Insights: Project scoping teams can drill into historical data based on a number of factors to ensure heavy machines are only rented when necessary

Business results

RSRG gained:

  • Reduced operational costs
  • New revenue stream as this capability was productized
  • Enhanced culture of data to drive operational and financial improvements
